Hi, Bernardo and Piedad. This is a great project and a nice website. I was exploring lamortalidad.org and I have a few questions…

(1) is it ok to tell others about the site (via twitter, for example)?

(2) is the email address really lamortalidade@gmail.com (Portuguese) rather than lamortalidad@gmail.com (Spanish) ?

(3) I already told Bernardo this, but I would really recommend serving the files as .csv , rather than .xlsx . There are surprising numbers of people who do not have Excel, do not have the latest version of Excel, or don’t want to download into Excel. If you used .csv, users would have more flexibility, and those who wanted Excel would probably get it automatically anyway.

Boa sorte y buena suerte,

Carl

Dear Carl,

Thanks for using our website and communicating with us. Sorry about the late reply, but I just learned how to do it from the website (a newbie in this matters). Our site is still on beta-version…. the reason Mexican data is taking longer than expected to arrange and clean up. All other countries are very much done, so we prefer to make to full “publicity” once we are certain about all data in our website.

Our email is indeed lamortalidadade in portugues because the spanish name was already taken. We are definitely thinking on changing the xls files to a plain version (txt or cvs), but the problem of getting the data from different countries and with Bernardo and me coordinating from far away. From now on, it will probably be easier and then we will be able to jump to a plain file. Thanks a lot for using our website and for your suggestions, they are really useful to us,

Piedad

Hello I am doing a research about mortality in Latin America so I found SUPER useful your data (long history data). I found the same information (number of death cases) in the UN data but only from 1996 to 2008 so I compared your data with them. I found slight differences personally I know that differences resources will produce different data the important thing is that it keeps comparable. However, I found some specific numbers
that apparently are typographic mistakes. for example : year 1996, females, range age 35-39 the number of deaths for UN is 4235 and in you register 41235 exactly 37000 cases more ( strange if you see the real behavior of deaths at that age during all history)

another specific case 1998 female range 0-1 UN is 18548 and Latin America human mortality data is 19548 so exactly (1000) cases I think typographic mistake

Thanks and keep working … so useful
